Tis the season...to find a place to write for an extended period of time. Several of my students have been asking about writing workshops in the US and overseas. Here are some writing workshops that I have heard good things about. I will keep a running list and update this list from time to time:
Catapult in NYC:Writing workshops, on-line and in person.
Haven Writing Retreats, in Whitefish, Montana: A good friend has gone here twice and loved it. The retreat is run by Laura Munson, who wrote a Modern Love column about her husband (who was trying to leave her) and turned the column into a book. Room and board included. If you decide to apply to this, please let me know.
Sirenland in Positano, Italy: Run by Dani Shapiro and her husband. They bring in great writers (Meg Wolitzer, Jim Shepherd, among them) and the hotel and setting are stunning. One of my students went to this and liked it a lot. If you apply to this, please let me know. Room and board included.
Tom Jenks in NYC and San Francisco: Two of my students took Jenks’ workshop last year and another student hired him to read her novel. He runs Narrative magazine. He has edited and published a fantastic list of authors. Room and board not included. For more information, email him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
MacDowell Colony: Writers’/artists’ retreat in Peterborough, NH. There is no fee for this---you are awarded a fellowship. Room and board included. It is competitive to get in. $30 application fee.
Yaddo: Writers’/artists’ retreat in Saratoga Springs, NY. There is no fee for this---you are awarded a fellowship. Room and board included. It is competitive to get in. $30 application fee.
